A flexible cantilever system has been reimagined as the ceiling of a typical office space, transforming it into an art and exhibition gallery. This adaptive ceiling structure intimately fits the existing building structure while constantly reshaping the exhibition interaction and space in relation to the contents and multiple ways of display in each future exhibition.
The realization of the Painting Cloud design involved digital fabrication, CNC cutting, welding, and assembling techniques. The result is a flexible and movable cantilever ceiling, creating a light structure that can adapt to future exhibitions and interact with the changing space, offering a new way of experiencing art.
Located at Yun Qi Cloud Town, the design and construction of the Painting Cloud project took three months to complete. The underlying research for this design focused on intervening in a light and flexible cantilever system to transform a limited space into a dynamic art space for exhibitions and interactions.
One of the main challenges overcome during the design process was re-creating the light and flexible cantilever system for the ceiling to animate the exhibition in a very limited space. This project completely changes the way exhibitions are perceived and constantly reproduces new gallery details in relation to the artworks and themes.
The innovative and flexible cantilever system hangs as the gallery ceiling, providing a new and immersive exhibition experience. The light and movable structure carefully adapts to the existing office building structure and space, framing both the bottom and upper space of the gallery by transforming the compressed space of its ceiling. The exhibition space can be changed each time, depending on the type of artworks and theme, creating an intimate and constantly evolving perception between visitors, art pieces, and space.
The Painting Cloud design was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2019. This prestigious award recognizes designs that exhibit outstanding creativity, resourcefulness, and technical skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life and making the world a better place.
